To say TAB Australian Cup contender Hardaway Winnie has caught Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Paul Bartolo by surprise is a massive understatement.
A very reluctant Bartolo did his mate Ron Martin, who bred and part-owns Hardaway Winnie, a favour when he agreed to take the reins for the Group 2 Sandown Laurels series in December.
But Bartolo’s opinion quickly changed when Hardaway Winnie won her Laurels heat in a fast 29.36s and while she ran sixth to Oakvale Beauty in the final, the daughter of Barcia Bale has won four of her seven starts for Bartolo.
